What this service covers
Artificial grass is a synthetic surface built up from a compacted sub-base, a permeable bedding layer, and a tufted turf carpet — usually with an infill (commonly silica sand, sometimes a sand/rubber blend) brushed into the pile to keep the fibres upright and add weight.
It suits areas where a consistent, low-maintenance green surface is wanted year-round: courtyards, small gardens, side returns, pet areas, and spaces that get heavy foot traffic or too little sun for natural turf to thrive. It's also commonly paired with paving — framing a synthetic lawn panel with a hard-wearing paved edge as part of a single courtyard or outdoor entertaining area.
Pile height, density and backing construction vary by product and application — a play area, a pet run and a decorative courtyard lawn each call for a different specification, which is why site assessment happens before any quote is finalised.

How the installation works
- 01
Site clearing and excavation
Existing grass, roots and topsoil are removed to a depth that allows for the base layers and finished turf height — typically 75–100mm, depending on drainage needs.

Base preparation and compaction
A crushed stone sub-base is laid in layers and compacted to create a stable, free-draining foundation. This stage is covered in detail in our base preparation guide.

Weed membrane
A permeable weed-suppressant membrane is laid over the compacted base to limit weed growth through the surface without blocking drainage.
- 04
Turf laying and jointing
Turf rolls are laid, trimmed to the space, and joined using seaming tape and adhesive or stitching so joins are not visible.
- 05
Securing the edges
Edges are pinned or fixed to a hard boundary (paving, edging strip or timber) to stop the turf lifting or shifting over time.
- 06
Infill and brushing
Infill is spread evenly and worked into the pile with a power brush, which stands the fibres up and gives the surface its finished density and feel.

Points worth discussing before you commit
Drainage matters more than the turf itself
A well-built base drains fast after rain. A poorly compacted or badly graded base is the most common cause of a synthetic lawn that puddles or sinks.
Sun exposure and surface heat
Artificial turf gets hotter than natural grass in direct summer sun. This is worth discussing for spaces used by children or pets in peak heat.
Product specification
Pile height, yarn type and infill are matched to how the space will be used. Turf is sourced from Cape Town–based suppliers such as Synthetic Turf Cape Town and Easigrass Cape Town, among others — the specific product used on your project is confirmed at quote stage, not assumed in advance.
