Service
Paving
Concrete paver driveways, patios and walkways, built on an engineered base and bedding layer — a surface that can be repaired paver-by-paver rather than resurfaced entirely.
What
What this service covers
Paving covers the installation of interlocking concrete pavers, precast slabs or clay pavers over a prepared base — for driveways, patios, pathways and other pedestrian or vehicular hard-standing areas. Paving is rarely specified in isolation — it commonly forms part of a broader project, from a driveway-and-lawn refresh to a full pool-area or garden transformation.
The base structure — sub-base, base course and bedding sand — is what carries the load and manages water movement beneath the surface. The pavers themselves are a wearing layer sitting on top of that structure, not a standalone surface.
Paver type, size, laying pattern and jointing approach affect both appearance and performance under load, which is why vehicular driveways are specified differently from a pedestrian patio.
Why
Why it's specified this way
Repairable, not just replaceable
Individual pavers can be lifted and reset — for utility trenching, settlement, or staining — without disturbing the whole surface.
Flexible surface, controlled movement
A properly built paved surface has small, engineered joints that accommodate minor ground movement rather than cracking as a single rigid slab.
Wide range of finishes
Paver colour, shape, texture and laying pattern give more design flexibility than a monolithic surface like tar or plain concrete.
How
How the installation works
- 01
Excavation to design depth
The area is excavated to a depth that accounts for sub-base, base course, bedding sand and paver thickness, with falls built in for drainage.
- 02
Sub-base and base course
Layers of compacted crushed stone are built up and compacted in stages to create a stable, load-bearing foundation — deeper and more heavily compacted for driveways than for pedestrian patios.
- 03
Edge restraints
Concrete or steel edge restraints are installed around the perimeter to stop the paved area spreading or shifting under load over time.
- 04
Bedding sand screeding
A thin, evenly screeded layer of coarse sand is laid directly beneath the pavers to allow precise, consistent bedding.
- 05
Paver laying
Pavers are laid to the chosen pattern, cut to fit edges and features, and checked continuously for line, level and consistent joint width.
- 06
Jointing and compaction
Jointing sand is swept into the gaps and the whole surface is compacted with a plate compactor, which locks the pavers together and completes the interlock.

Points worth discussing before you commit
Driveway vs patio specification
A driveway carrying vehicle loads needs a thicker, more heavily compacted base than a pedestrian patio — this is priced and specified differently. If you're weighing paving against a tar/asphalt driveway, our guide — Paving vs Tar — compares the two.
Falls and drainage
Paving must be laid with a fall away from the house and any doorways or thresholds, to move surface water off the paved area correctly.
Joint sand maintenance
Jointing sand can wash out over time from heavy rain or pressure washing, and occasionally needs topping up to keep the surface locked.
Paver sourcing
Pavers are sourced from Cape Town–area suppliers such as Royal Paving and N1 Paving, among others — the specific product, colour and pattern are confirmed at quote stage.
