What this service covers
A natural lawn installation covers ground preparation, grading for drainage and appearance, soil amendment, and establishing turf — either by laying roll-on (instant) lawn or, less commonly for fast results, seeding. A natural lawn is often just one element of a wider garden plan — paved paths, patios and other hard surfacing are frequently designed alongside it.
Lawn renovation covers existing lawns that have thinned, compacted, or developed drainage or levelling problems — often addressed through aeration, topdressing, overseeding or, where the existing lawn is beyond recovery, full re-establishment.
South African lawns are typically warm-season grasses such as Kikuyu, Buffalo (also known as St Augustine) or LM Berea, each with different shade tolerance, wear resistance and maintenance needs. Which grass type suits a given site depends on sun exposure, foot traffic and the look the space calls for — this is a general horticultural distinction, not a claim about what any particular supplier stocks.

How the installation works

Existing ground conditions, drainage, sun/shade patterns and soil type are assessed to determine the right grass type and preparation approach.

Clearing and rough grading
Old grass, weeds, rubble and debris are cleared, and the area is roughly graded to the intended finished levels and falls.

Soil preparation
Topsoil is cultivated and amended as needed — correcting compaction, improving structure, and levelling to a fine grade ready for turf.

Laying roll-on lawn
Rolled turf is laid in a staggered brick-bond pattern, butted tightly with no visible gaps, and rolled to ensure good soil contact.

Establishment watering
New lawn needs consistent watering during root establishment — typically the first two to three weeks — before settling into a normal watering routine.

Points worth discussing before you commit
Water restrictions and lawn choice
Cape Town's water restrictions have at times limited garden irrigation. Grass type and lawn size are worth discussing against realistic watering allowances.
Shade tolerance
Some warm-season grasses thin out significantly in heavy shade. Deeply shaded areas may suit a different surface altogether.
Ongoing maintenance
